Year 2 2021 - 2022
Mrs Ogden
Miss Khatun
Our class teacher is Mrs Ogden
Our teaching assistant is Miss Khatun
Our class is a supportive and nurturing environment where our children feel safe and confident to be themselves. We encourage children to become more independent, developing a love of learning and an eagerness to find out more.
Our topics for this year are:
Autumn - The History of Oldham
Spring - London
Summer - Live and Let Live
If you would like to keep fully up to date with everything we are doing in class then follow us on twitter and by accessing your child's SeeSaw account.
Our PE days are Monday and Tuesday.
Your child’s PE kit should consist of a yellow t-shirt, navy shorts and black pumps for the duration of each term. Please ensure that PE kits and school uniform are clearly labelled with your child’s name. If your child wears earrings, please make sure they are removed for PE days or if this is not possible, that they are covered with a plaster. Any child who has long hair must have it tied up for PE.
Homework
We appreciate all the work that is done at home with our children to help embed the learning that is done in school. We give out homework weekly to support the work they are doing in class. There are also ongoing activities the children can access using the logins in their homework books for the following websites:
Reading
We aim to promote a love of reading in Year Two and have lots of opportunities to read a range of inspiring books. We hope that you would support us in this and encourage your child to read regularly at home. We have given each child a reading book which is at their reading level and also a phonics book that allows your child to practice the particular sounds they have been working on in their phonics sessions. Reading cards have been sent home for you with suggested questions on to ask your child while they are reading which I encourage you to use. This will ensure they have a good understanding of their book. Please write in your child’s reading record each time your child reads so that we can see when they need their books changing and how they have found them. Children can change their books any day during the week as long as they have their reading record signed.
Phonics
In class we are still doing daily phonics lessons using Little Wandle to help build up your child's reading and spelling skills. Each week, they will bring home a phonics book that will help them embed the sounds they have been doing in these lessons. If you would like any help with the sounds or the way we are teaching phonics then the LittleWandle parent's page is a great resource. There are also lots of fantastic games your child can access at home to help embed the skills they are working on in class. These are a few really helpful websites:
Spellings
In Year Two, we are working hard to broaden the bank of words that our children can spell confidently so that it makes their writing easier and more enjoyable, without them having to stop and ponder their spellings. Each week, your child will be given five words to learn for a test on Tuesday. They are tricky words that cannot be sounded out using their phonics so please ensure your child has time to learn the spellings by heart each week. We are supporting this with interactive activities that your child can access from the pupil area of the website. There are also some songs online that will help them learn these tricky words.
Maths
This year we will be working through our 2, 5, and 10 times tables to make sure that we know them all alongside our topics in Maths. Please encourage your child to learn these by practicing them at home, building up their speed and fluency. Again, there are lots of games and songs that your child can access to help them with this and we have listed a few below..
