We have P.E. on Tuesday. Children will need to have an indoor and outdoor P.E kit in school on this day.
As part of the national curriculum, we will be going swimming on a Friday afternoon. Girls will be required to bring a towel, one-piece swimsuit and a swimming hat. Boys will be required to bring a towel and swimming trunks. Please note the length of the swimming trunks must be higher than their knee.
It is also important to note that children must remove earrings before they come to school on a Friday. Goggles are also not permitted.
SWIMMING WILL BE CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
We begin our school year with a very exciting topic all about CHOCOLATE!
We will explore the origins of chocolate, where it is grown, how it is manufacured and how it became the chocolate we know and love today.
In science, we will be sudying states of matter and learning about each of their properties.
Our topics for the year:
Autumn 1 - Chocolate and the Maya Civilisation & States of Matter
Autumn 2 - Chocolate and the Maya Civilisation & Animals Including Humans
Spring 1 - Rainforests & Living Things
Spring 2 - Ancient Greece & Living Things
Summer 1 - A Local History Study of Oldham & Sound
Summer 2 - Road Trip USA & Electricity
As our topic is all about chocolate, we couldn't miss the opportunity to explore the wonderful Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.
We will use this text to inspire us to create setting and character descriptions. We will also be studying biography writing and create our own biography of Roald Dahl.
Throughout the year, we will follow a two week timetable where the children will have the opportunity to read 1:1 with Miss Ross and Mrs Bolton, as well as exploring a variety of different texts following the VIPERS structure.
The children will be given a reading book which is at their level. To continue to promote the love of reading, the children will choose a library book from our class library, where they can choose from a variety of different authors, such as Roald Dahl and David Walliams. We hope that you could support us with this promotion by encouraging your child to read regulaly at home and signing their reading record. The children are free to change their library book providing their record has been signed at home.
In Year 4, we are working extremely hard to increase the variety of vocabulary we are using in our writing. To assist with this, we are sending home 10 spellings a week for your child to learn, which will follow the Spelling Shed scheme. This will be supported in class with interactive activities to prepare for a quiz on Friday. Your child is able to access additional activites on the Spelling Shed website, using their logins they have been given.
We will be focusing on the place value of 4-digit numbers by using different manipulatives to develop our understanding.
Times tables can provide the foundations to children's learning in maths. It is crutial that your child is fluent in their times tables from 1 to 12 by the end of Year 4, when they will sit the Multiplication Tables Check. Within class, we will be promoting the learning of times tables with interactive activities and quizes. It would be extremely appriciated if your child is encourged to practice their times tables at home to help build their confidence, fluency and speed.
Each week your child will be given a specific times table to take home and learn in preparation for a quiz on Friday.
Here are some resources that your child could access whilst at home.
Homework will be handed out on a Monday and will be collected on a Friday.
