Intent
Learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes; learn new ways of thinking in the target language language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
Why Spanish?
Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world. Our decision to teach Spanish as our modern foreign language was based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, the will of the pupils, the expertise of staff and the language(s) taught at a pupils' feeder secondary school. Many of our children holiday in Spanish-speaking countries; hispanic culture and language is becoming increasingly prevelant in film, music and our everyday lives which provides the opportunity for immersion beyond the classroom. Spanish is highly phonetic and the pronunciation rules that govern the language are relatively consistent making it a great choice as a second, or even third, language for the children who attend St. Luke's.
Implementation
At St Luke’s, we are currently developing our Spanish curriculum so that children in KS2 have a weekly Spanish lesson that follows the Primary Languages Network scheme of work. We have adapted the PLN Long term plans to fit our school context with a rolling programme to ensure a firm foundation of knowledge for future success.
We use songs, stories, role-play and games to help children develop a love of languages.
We focus on developing the children’s listening, speaking and reading skills. Written tasks gradually progress from single words in Year 3 to linking short sentences with conjunctions in Year 6.
As well as developing linguistic skills, the children’s SMSC development and their respect for British Values and other cultures are enhanced as children learn about the diversity of Spain and other Spanish speaking countries.
In KS1 we use songs and greetings to introduce the concept of a foreign language.
